My favorite “never without” piece of outdoor gear?
My Klean Kanteen vacuum insulated mug. I can endure nasty weather, balky tent guy lines and fire-breathing deadline dragons as long as the coffee is hot.

Everyone should read a book about outdoor adventure. My recommendation….
Sorry, but just too many books have influenced my passion for the outdoors. There’s always at least one in my backpack.

I remember my first camping trip……
 Spent the night outside in the backyard with my little brother. A blanket thrown over clothesline served as our tent. Army surplus canteens, sleeping bags and peanut butter sandwiches. Yes, we stayed out all night.

I’d like to light a campfire and….
Stay up all night and listen to Teddy Roosevelt, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Aldo Leopold and Edward Abbey talk about wild places. Keep the whiskey glasses full and the fire stoked.

Now that enough time has passed, I can laugh at the time I……….
Completely spent after a hard day on the trail, I fumbled setting up my MSR Whisperlite stove. When the misaligned fuel line led to the stove bursting into flames, kicking the burning contraption into the lake wasn’t my best performance as a woodsman.

Bigfoot? Yes or No.
 Yes. I think I’ve shared a tent with him in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
